SatchVai Band Brings the Surfing with the Hydra Tour to Buffalo

The “Surfing with the Hydra” tour made its stop in Buffalo, NY and delivered an unforgettable night of guitar driven brilliance. Legendary guitarists Joe Satriani and Steve Vai traded solos, shared the stage with infectious energy, and brought the crowd to its feet inside Kleinhans Music Hall.

Joe Satriani and Steve Vai brought their “Surfing with the Hydra” tour to Kleinhans Music Hall for an evening that celebrated technical brilliance, musical chemistry, and pure joy for the craft of guitar playing. Backed by an outstanding band featuring guitarist Pete Thorn, bassist Marco Mendoza, and drummer Kenny Aronoff, the performance delivered a masterclass in musicianship without ever losing its sense of fun or spontaneity.
Before the band took the stage, the crowd was treated to a humorous video directed by Satriani’s son ZZ for the duo’s latest single “Dancing.” The clip featured Satriani and Vai sitting at a boardroom table while being lectured by an over the top “artist manager” portrayed by Brendon Small, who insisted they needed dancers to make their act more exciting. As the video continued behind them, the band stormed onto the stage and launched into “Dancing,” immediately setting an energetic tone for the night.

“I Wanna Play My Guitar,” originally recorded with Glenn Hughes, was handled impressively by Mendoza, whose vocals added another layer of personality to the performance. Vai and Satriani then alternated fronting the band for several songs, each showcasing their distinct playing styles while also celebrating each other’s material.
Vai delivered fiery performances of “Zeus in Chains” and “Little Pretty,” while Satriani answered with electrifying renditions of “Surfing with the Alien” and “Sahara.” Individually, each guitarist was remarkable, but the true highlight of the evening came whenever the two shared the stage together. Their admiration for one another was unmistakable, and the chemistry between them elevated every moment into something special.
The supporting musicians were far more than a traditional backing band. Aronoff anchored the evening with massive grooves and a thunderous presence that often recalled the power and feel of John Bonham. Mendoza and Thorn added depth, groove, and harmonic texture that gave the music an even greater sense of scale and intensity.

One of the night’s most unforgettable moments came during Vai’s performance of “Teeth of the Hydra.” The guitarist unveiled his elaborate multi necked Hydra guitar, mounted on a stand at center stage. Watching Vai effortlessly move between the instrument’s necks with surgical precision left the audience in awe, earning one of the loudest ovations of the evening.
Satriani responded with a blistering version of “Satch Boogie,” even finishing the song by playing guitar with his teeth, much to the crowd’s delight. Throughout the night, both players demonstrated incredible control and fluidity, their fingers gliding effortlessly across the fretboards while fans throughout the theater attempted to follow along with enthusiastic air guitar performances of their own.
The evening closed beautifully with a duet performance of Satriani’s beloved ballad “Always With You, Always With Me.” Hearing Vai add harmonies and melodic accents to the song created one of the most emotional moments of the night. Their synchronized hammer on passages drew stunned reactions from the audience and served as another reminder of the extraordinary level of musicianship on display.

After a standing ovation, the band returned for an encore featuring Satriani’s “Crowd Chant” before ending the night with a roaring rendition of Born to Be Wild by Steppenwolf. With Mendoza leading vocals and the entire band joining in, the crowd enthusiastically sang along to the iconic chorus, bringing the evening to a triumphant and celebratory close.
