Coheed and Cambria and Arm’s Length Connect with Buffalo on a Humid Evening

On a sweltering Thursday night in June, fans packed Buffalo RiverWorks as Coheed and Cambria brought their This Is Our War Tour to the waterfront. Backed by a strong opening set from Arm’s Length, the evening featured intricate musicianship, crowd favorites spanning the band’s catalog, and a performance that reminded everyone why Coheed and Cambria continues to command such a devoted following.

Canadian pop punk outfit Arm’s Length opened the evening and immediately found a receptive audience. The response from the packed crowd was loud from the start as vocalist Allen Steinberg led the band through a set largely built around material from There’s A Whole World Out There. Positioned across the width of the stage, the band performed with an easy confidence. With Buffalo located so close to the Canadian border, many fans made the trip across to support the band, helping create a strong connection between the group and the crowd.
What continues to separate Arm’s Length from many of their peers is their ability to balance catchy melodies with more intricate arrangements. Their irregular riffs and shifting song structures give the material a distinctive character without sacrificing accessibility. At one point, Steinberg joked with the crowd, the lighthearted exchange only strengthening the connection between band and audience. By the end of their set, Arm’s Length had won over much of the crowd and further demonstrated why they continue to gain momentum.

As darkness settled over Buffalo RiverWorks, anticipation grew for Coheed and Cambria. Admired by fans for their intricate arrangements, expansive storytelling, and dynamic live performances, the band arrived in Buffalo as part of their This Is Our War Tour, one stop on a busy summer schedule that also includes dates supporting Shinedown.
The stage production was impressive without feeling excessive. Multiple lighting rigs framed the stage and shifted throughout the evening to match the mood of each song. Claudio Sanchez served as the obvious focal point, but drummer Josh Eppard was equally difficult to ignore. Throughout the night, Eppard delivered one of the most captivating performances on stage, constantly in motion while providing far more than a rhythmic foundation. His playing added energy and detail to every song.
The setlist balanced material from across the band’s catalog. Early fans were rewarded with selections from The Second Stage Turbine Blade, including “Everything Evil,” while “The Suffering” generated one of the loudest singalongs of the evening. “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3” served as one of the night’s highlights, featuring an extended instrumental section that showcased the band’s chemistry and technical ability. During the song, Sanchez even worked a guitar solo into a brief display of showmanship, before seamlessly returning to some of the more demanding vocal passages of the set.

A quieter moment arrived with “Corner My Confidence,” performed by Sanchez alone and providing a brief change of pace from the larger arrangements that dominated the evening. The performance highlighted both his vocal ability and songwriting while giving the crowd a chance to catch its breath.
Throughout the night, Sanchez, Eppard, guitarist Travis Stever, and bassist Zach Cooper performed with remarkable cohesion and chemistry. Sanchez handled the demanding vocal range with consistency while balancing rhythm guitar duties and frontman responsibilities, while Stever’s lead guitar work added another layer of energy and technical skill to the performance. Stever provided a steady presence throughout the set, adding texture and harmony parts that helped fill out the band’s layered sound. As mentioned, Eppard’s performance behind the kit was a constant highlight, combining power and precision while driving the momentum of each song. Cooper anchored the low end with a confident performance that often tied together the band’s more complex arrangements. The band’s ability to move from delicate passages to heavier moments without losing focus remains one of its greatest strengths. Songs that can feel dense on record took on an added dimension in a live setting, where the group’s intricate melodies and dynamic shifts became even more apparent.
Located along the banks of the Buffalo River, Coheed and Cambria delivered a performance that showcased exactly why they have maintained such a devoted following for more than two decades. Balancing fan favorites with newer material, the band offered a set that celebrated both its history and its continued evolution.
