REVIEW: Rick Hughes Delivers a Bilingual Rock Statement on Redemption

Rick Hughes, best known as the powerhouse voice behind Canadian metal legends Sword, returns this October with a bold and surprisingly varied solo effort titled Redemption. After decades of commanding the stage with molten riffage and steely vocals, Hughes proves he is far from finished. In fact, this might be his most personal and dynamic work yet.

Leading the charge is a cover of The Who’s “The Real Me,” a choice that might raise eyebrows until you hear it. This is not just a faithful rendition but a full-blown rock reunion, featuring an early 1980s lineup of Ozzy Osbourne’s touring band. Joining Hughes are guitarist Brad Gillis, bassist Rudy Sarzo, and drummer Tommy Aldridge. The result is a gritty and muscular take on the Quadrophenia classic, honoring the original’s chaotic energy while injecting it with a fresh, modern metal edge.
Over the course of Redemption’s ten tracks, with an eleventh included as a CD bonus, Hughes explores themes of resilience, identity, and reflection, often drawing on his deep Montreal roots. The album opens with “Dead End Road,” a high-energy rock track that sets the tone with urgency and grit. “Croire en l’Homme,” one of two French-language songs, delivers a stirring message of faith in humanity, while “Carry the Torch” offers an emotionally charged rallying cry for perseverance. “Will of the Gun” is cinematic and moody, driven by powerful riffs and a commanding vocal performance. “Shake My Soul” swings with swagger, while “Someday” slows things down for a melodic, introspective moment. “Dans la Peau” stands out as a bilingual anthem, merging the English and French sides of Hughes’s identity in one powerful track. “In a Perfect World” reflects on ideals and illusions with a more atmospheric production. “Ça Va Brasser” is a full-throttle rocker that proudly embraces its French-Canadian roots, and the bonus track, a French version of “Dans la Peau,” gives the song even more emotional weight and cultural resonance.
With its great performances, Redemption is a very special and unique rock album. It brings together an impressive list of collaborators, creating a collection that feels both celebratory and deeply personal. Included are two more songs co-written by and featuring the superb songwriting and inspired guitar playing of the great Brad Gillis. Another song features the extraordinary talent of The Doors’ legendary guitarist Robby Krieger. The album also includes powerful contributions from rock royalty Lee Aaron, vocal powerhouse Amy Keys whose credits include Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, Toto, Sting, and Stevie Wonder, rising guitar hot shot Jacob Deraps, as well as Rick’s gifted sister Lulu Hughes, whose appearance adds a soulful emotional layer to the album.
“This very special song is part of the upcoming Rick Hughes album Redemption,” says Hughes, referring to one of the featured collaborations. “A collection of great rock songs to be released on Friday, October 24, 2025, on CD, vinyl, and digital format worldwide by Deko Entertainment, and featuring more great collaborations with some famous musicians.”
Brad Gillis’s presence is felt throughout the album. Beyond his guitar work, his songwriting influence adds depth and drive to several tracks. Robby Krieger’s feature adds a dreamy, psychedelic texture, while Jacob Deraps injects a youthful edge and energy that balances beautifully with the seasoned veterans. Lee Aaron and Amy Keys contribute standout vocals that enrich the album’s dynamic range.

Redemption is not just a solo album. It is a statement of identity, artistry, and collaboration. Rick Hughes shows he is not content to live in the shadow of Sword’s legacy. Instead, he uses that foundation to build something broader, bolder, and deeply personal. With its all-star supporting cast and fearless mix of languages and styles, this album deserves attention not only from metal diehards but from anyone who appreciates passionate, well-crafted rock music.
Hughes is not just carrying the torch. He is lighting new fires.
